I love language and culture. But language includes more than words; it includes gestures too. Yesterday I discovered that thumbing one’s nose at people is no longer part of our set of communicative gestures in the US. I assume it’s been replaced by the L, loser sign and the finger?

I 💗 what I do. “Boy” (παις) can mean child or slave. Yesterday I looked to see if this was true of “little child” (παιδιον).

Yes, but rarely. I found it in the 5th and 4th c. BCE in Aristophanes, and also in 3 lists of slaves. These kinds of searches always feel like digging for buried treasure.

The other way would be to look at workers like this. Individual differences are gifts, and the decision about what is to be built is made only after leadership has a good idea about the uniquenesses available. Then, they (everyone?) decide what can best be built given all these parts.

Transactional leadership looks at workers like this. The leaders are building something. They have already decided what it is. They just need the parts, and the parts are more or less interchangeable and replaceable. In fact, anything unique about someone is annoying and should be made invisible.
