Sorry for messing up numbering. Have given up until more coffee. I don’t know what’s to become of my students who are skilled and insightful readers of almost any text put begore them. I know that their skills are needed now more than ever before.

2 We’re down to (I think) 21 now just through people leaving and retiring with no hires ever. And early retirement incentives. And never hiring. Meanwhile admins, courted and told that they are business geniuses, have sold off parking, dining, online classes, and dorms to various for-profit entities

1/1 Thank you for this beautifully written and searing essay. I teach at Eastern Michigan University. We’re unionized also. Our Arts & Sciences college is waisting away by attrition. The multi-disciplinary English Department where I teach had 55 tt faculty lines when I came in the 90s.
