Sometimes parents tell us that they feel anxious or embarrassed reading or talking to their baby out loud. Some tell us they don’t know what to say. How can nurses, medics & AHPPs help with this?

It doesn’t matter what you read to your baby on NICU. Your voice and the hearing words are the important thing. But we still love a good children’s book! These are some of the ODN team’s favourites.

You can read to babies on NICU at any age. They don’t need to be “old enough”.
Read to babies in their incubator, cot, out for cuddles or skin to skin. Here’s some helpful information from NWAFT OT Lucy about reading in skin to skin

It’s #worldbookday2025! Here at the EoE neonatal ODN we’re working with our units and The Book Trust to promote the benefits of reading on neonatal units. Today I’m at Peterborough City Hospital celebrating with their amazing neonatal team
