I don’t understand how ANY black American could support ANY Republican in ANY position of authority. How much clearer can Republicans be: ideally, they want chattel slavery back; at the least, disenfranchise all black voters and reinstate Jim Crow.

2/ Of course, this will only redound to the Dems’ benefit if they can create and deliver strong messaging around this, but I doubt that this can happen with the weak and inchoate DNC and a passive whiner like Schumer in charge.

I don’t think that’s the reason. The retreat was strategic: Dems can now claim they took the hit so Repubs would reopen the country for SNAP, travel, and Thanksgiving, knowing that Johnson won’t because Repubs and Trump don’t give a shit about suffering Americans who aren’t billionaires.
