I think part cosmic horror lovecraft but also iirc earlier in the movie there are the odd sign about warning about it being an old weapons test range and them finding she casings etc

I took it to be that ~*something*~ either by military experiment or natural feature of the caves meant things leaked through to our world, and interacting in any way just utterly breaks a human as they step out of linear time, space etc
