Not quite the same, but whenever I would try to join a conversation at work, I would get talked over. Then the topic would change, and eventually I would just walk away and go do busy work.
Then later I would get asked why I never tried to talk to anyone or join in on conversations...

Tips to get around this (from personal experience):
The trick is to "ask" Kit to do something, instead of "tell" Kit to do something.
It is more likely to get do if you phrase it as a request.
