The Larp Census

The Larp Census is an exciting project to discover how many larpers there are in the world, and to explore the different ways in which people larp.

The census includes all #larp, from vampire and parlor to fantasy campaigns, Nordic, fests, jubensha, battle games and more. E.g. the 2014 census found that 52% of larpers had played in a one-shot in the last year, while 76% had played in a campaign. We hope to get more details in the next census.

Definitely not too late, thanks!

#larp is varied. Some have few players, others have thousands. Players can make characters or be given them. You may play a character once or in a series. Rules vary from complex to absent. Some use foam weapons. Fantasy, SF and horror popular genres. VtM games like you’re playing are popular too.

Also glad to hear you found our data useful! Is it published online? We’d love to add it to our publications page if it’s not there yet: larpcensus.org/publications...

We invited larpers in Germany to answer the Round 1 questions. If you didn’t answer Round 1 you’re welcome to answer Round 2 and just select a nearby country like Austria. We just want each larper to only answer a single round.

What is the LARP scene like in South Korea? Are there many other LARPS besides this V:tM game?

The results of our 2014 global survey showed that about half of people larping are over 30.

This translation of our round 2 pilot survey is in Mandarin. If you know of any larpers and jubensha players in Taiwan please share.

We’re currently doing a pilot study in preparation for our next big poll.

It’s really no trouble, if you don’t mind. We’re following everyone with any interest in larp, as part of our outreach. Our feed is a secondary concern and it’s full of the whole spectrum of things larpers are interested in anyway, a lot of which is politics right now.

We appreciate you supporting our larp research hustle. 😉

Nice. In 2014 we did ask how many events larpers had attended in the last year. You can explore the results here: larpcensus.org/results/en

Interesting idea! If we did have that data, it could perhaps be compared to surveys of the general population, such as this one that found around 16.5% of people to be neurodivergent.
The Neurodiverse Survey Experience
Researchers shed light on neurodiverse respondents' experiences participating in public opinion research, employee surveys and personality assessments.

We specified different countries for each round so that people would only answer one round. If you missed round 1 and are in Canada you can still answer round 2 and just choose a different country like USA. We’re not using country in this analysis.

Yes the UK was in round 1 which has now closed. It was largely advertised on FB but that’s slow going these days, which is why we’re here now too.

These surveys are to test some questions. Later we will launch the actual census, and it would be fantastic if you could help spread the word then.

Yes we’ll be doing a full second global census once we finish these pilot surveys.
