Seabirds and shorebirds along the East coast are in trouble.🚨

Avian flu, climate change & food shortages have already hit them hard.

Now, plastic pollution threatens the places they'll soon gather to feed, nest & raise their chicks.

They need our help: www.rspb.org.uk/donate/emerg...

This #MapMonday, have a look at this pin-cushion map we recently acquired.

The cushion, dating from around 1810, has a map of Scotland on one side, and England and Wales on the reverse. It's around 5cm in diameter 🗺️

Happy Spring Equinox! 🌼

Below, from the School Atlas of Astronomy, published 1856: "Now, on March 20th... Spring is said to commence. The Sun is in the equator, day is equal in length to night, and hence the position is called the spring or vernal equinox."

On this day 1807 British ships came under attack from Turkish forts along the Dardanelles. This manuscript map has both an illustration of the action with a map of the area, a nice combination creating a dramatic work. More here blogs.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/maps/2024/02... @bodleianlibraries.bsky.social
