Earlier this week, the Canadaland podcast released an episode that fabricated a statement from me and used that fabrication to frame a false narrative. The episode concludes with an anecdote, allegedly from me, about protesters shouting antisemitic chants through a megaphone at a pro-Palestine event in Toronto organised by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM). This anecdote is a lie. I’ve participated in many pro-Palestine events in Toronto including marches organized by PYM. Not once have I witnessed the slightest hint of antisemitism by the organizers, nor the attendees. The fabricated anecdote is an intentional conflation of two unrelated stories. I asked Canadaland to retract the statement, but they chose to dig in their heels by posting a feigned “correction” that doubled-down on the falsehood. This isn’t a technical error. It’s an attempt to smear and malign the pro-Palestine movement and to spread an Islamophobic stereotype. It reveals a complete disregard of the most basic journalistic standards.
