Human, scientist, euskaldun berri, purveyor of philosophical subtleties, associate professor at IKERBASQUE / AZTI interested in marine microorganisms great and small, planktonic or benthic, biomonitoring, climate change and coastal pollution.
We're now halfway through the Ostreobila project (EU Interreg) with lots of interesting results presented in its general meeting related to the aim of to better understand and monitor the toxic algae Ostreopsis that is an emerging threat to human and ecological health here, and to standardise >

Well, he did self identify with this guy in his social media posts. Don't anyone from photographers that take this kind of shot to journalists that publish it get summarily executed yet, btw? If not, better, but I'm surprised. Are we still in 1933?

Sounds reasonable

First tiger mosquito I've seen here in Zumaia. So far they've officially only reached Donostia-San Sebastian as they're spreading locally from the north but it was just a question of time. Thanks for that, humanity, and the runaway climate change we've caused 😡. (1/2)

First try brewing sriracha ("the ketchup of Asia) on my home-grown chilis. Microbes, do your thing!

Lobster Mac'n'Cheese. No, thank you, Jeeves, I'd rather, I mean, wtaf? Mac'n'Cheese? Serve me actual dinner and pack your bags tomorrow, if youd be so kind
June 29, 2025 at 11:38 PM
Nah, you just have good taste. And to be "upper class" on this I think you need to have very poor taste and definitely not be upper class. Lobster Mac'n'Cheese? Foie burger ? Wtaf? Who'd ruin lobster or foie like that except someone trying, far too hard, to be upper class? 😅

How about just declaring full independence?

So, don't just start blocking people based on random lists from accounts you don't know. And also, what's up with this whole behaviour, and is there anything to do with these people making and sharing these ridiculous false flag lists? Is it common?

Photos from yesterday the set of MicroMon the Movie in beautiful Zumaia - coming soon to a YouTube channel near you (don't miss it).

Join the worst bully on the schoolyard and let him control your life and make it miserable, you'll get his word that he'll protect you from possible revenges from the kids he bullied, in return. Something that would cost, let's say a hundred million gazillion global GNP equivalents otherwise

Before you spread your wings, there's just no knowing how far you will have to walk, or how much bloody time you will waste doing it. As they say. (no ERC grant for me, at least this time)

Cherry blossoms (trad. European cultivar, selected for berries not flowers), Iraeta here in the Basque country, this time of year 2 ya vs the Japanese kind, shot in Kyoto, ages ago. (Will break the chain here - I don't do chain posting stuff, not me 😉)

Explored the flysch limestone caves of my local beach Itzurun (that also happens to be the most spectacular beach of the world 😅) today

Au revoir Evian et #Aquaecomics ( @aquaecomics.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy ). I hope very much to see you again.

...and the exciting results from the MerClub project I am happy to have been part of hunting mercury "detoxifier" microbes in marine sediments and using them for biorestuaration

Silvia Acinas AT CSIC ICM presenting impressive results from the Tara polar expeditions. Lots of unknown taxa, bigger genomes v temperate waters, 60% MAGs with polar distribution (as opposed to bipolar ie both Arctic and Antarctic) at #Aquaecomics d3

Today in #Aquaecomics, my amazing colleague in @azti.bsky.social Leire Garate presented our work using time series to study the temporal stability, potential interaction structure and effects of human pressures on those, in estuary sediment microbe communities. #microbialEcology

Ramiro Logares @ramalok.bsky.social talking about the importance of marine microbes (the absolute keystones of life imho) and how time series like the BBMO and global expeditions like Tara are fundamental for better understanding ecology and adapta to climate change, #Aquaecomics d2

Fascinating and important talk by Tristan Cordier @trtcrd.bsky.social on the utility and challenges w ancient sediment DNA ( #sedaDNA). ~"Beyond past biodiversity, can we reconstruct [understand] ancient ocean ecosystems and link it to contemporary climate change". #Aquaecomics 2025, Evian, France

Great keynote on #eDNA based environmental #biomonitoring on #Aquaecomics day 2 highlighting how it can never correspond to traditional morpho based methods despite its advantages. We should "complement and exploit its full potential, not retrofitting".
