Life affects me, so all my opinions are valid.
The arrogance of homeownership in Ghana is palpable. The small mindedness of believing you can do whatever you like without consideration of neighbours.

My neighbour burns refuse regularly which fills my home with smoke despite my polite request for her cease.

It’s unfortunately time to get legal.

Cape Town, my happy place. The perfect place to have seen out a miserable year.

The general tardiness in Ghana coupled with corruption creates the perfect storm for inaction. Yesterday the plumber showed up seven hours late and. Today the mason is an hour and a half late and only just calls to say he can’t make it today. What they’re arrogantly saying is my time doesn’t matter.

So the house was finally handed over and I’ve moved in. I expected a few snags as with anything new, but wow!! Nothing like this.
Leaking pipes, cracking masonry, rising damp and a leaking roof just in time for rainy season. My contractor Prosper Nyator is probably the worst in Ghana.🇬🇭

I’ve had to put in a borehole as the water in the area is just unreliable. We’re nearing the finish line and it really couldn’t come any faster. It has been a tortuous eight months. Major lesson learned: get yourself a foreman/site manager/ project manager for your building project in Ghana.

When mum originally built the house that was on site back in the 80’s there was no piped water in the area, so she built an underground water vault, which I’m now redesigning into a swimming pool. Let’s see how close to the vision in the last pic I get. Incidentally, there’s only intermittent water🙄

Had to let the painting contractor go. I know I have exacting standards and a touch of OCD but when “professionals” don’t have an eye for details that’s a major issue for me, irrespective of what field they’re in. And when they can’t see what I’m seeing then we have a problem.

Getting comfortable with living alone is the most power you can command. No one can mess with your mind, and you build a phenomenal level of resilience against BS.

Let’s not mix the script, being alone is a chosen absence of interference by another, whereas loneliness is an emotional inflection.

Definitely not the worst view for breakfast. An entire weekend on my own at the lake was more than therapy.

It’s a labour of love.

The house is coming along nicely but I needed a break from that too.

My mind needed a break from the city.

São Tomé one of my best holidays. Unplanned and on my own. This place is so chilled. Just took each day as it came. Great food, happy people and some of the most stunning and unspoiled beaches and forests.

Growing up, I used to think this was so cute and funny, but as I get older it begins to sound like good advise.

I promise to be more Zen today, and more compassionate towards the idiots that cross my path. Like the dead, they are unfortunately unaware of their condition.

I have now clawed back 9%. It’s not easy but it’s worth it.

Month No.3 and I was 15% over budget, so I took a week off work and took over procurement. I sat in front of my computer trawling through Tonaton and Jiji to find wholesalers, who I then visited and took away pro forma invoices. I then used the pro forma invoices as a yardstick with other suppliers.

Building in Ghana is not for the faint of heart. There are many abandoned projects and I now understand why. Fluctuating costs of material and contractors who take shortcuts to their favourite suppliers instead of finding the best product at the best price, is also a major contributor.
