Books, art, and other curiosities.
Dark, compelling, sinister - Joyce Carol Oates’ novel “Fox” is an examination of how a bad actor can groom an entire community and get away with horrific acts. Not an easy book to read, but impossible to put down.

Thank you to my smart cousin for recommending this beautiful book. I read some reviews that stated the book was “heavy handed”, I disagree. Addiction is messy, relationships are complicated and the author explores these and fate beautifully. Ultimately, the book is about the art of living and dying

Percival Everett has written a powerful novel about racism and justice (or lack of) and the lasting impacts of both. Retribution arrives in the form of an unexpected twist. Two enthusiastic thumbs up for this thought provoking book.

If I had not read these two good books back to back I may not have caught the many similarities. If I had to pick one, I would suggest “If We Were Villains” by M.L Rio

This delightful little book may only take a few hours to read, but the stellar character development and delicious plot twist (no spoilers!) are unforgettable. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up for “The English Understand Wool” by Helen Dewitt!

Both the novel, The Incident Report by Martha Baillie, and the movie based on the book titled Darkest Miriam, quietly worm their way into your psyche. The format is genius, and the exploration of connection, mental health, and purpose is beautifully done.

Hiromi Kawakami’s new novel Under the Eye of the Big Bird (2025 Booker Prize short list) is wonderful. Multiple stories intertwine to create a beautiful though troubling narrative about human existence and our seemingly inevitable extinction.

Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies is a beautiful, contemplative book by author Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. The narrative threads the characters’ relationships and connections to each other and the world around them in such a way as to gently pull the reader along, the perfect book for long, dark
