Land Use Policy Working Group Green Party of England & Wales
@landusegpew.bsky.social
We are the official Land Use Policy Working Group of the Green Party of England & Wales. Land is a vital irreplaceable asset. It must be used with the greatest respect to preserve it for future generations. We discuss and propose policies to achieve this.
The Green Party is genuinely committed to achieving 30:30 (the UN supported Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework). We have the policies to achieve this including our new policy which says that 25% of each square kilometre in UK should comprise natural or semi-natural habitat.

The government also lacks policies to achieve other targets in has set to protect nature, such as its stated intention to reduce the use of nitrates and phosphates in farming.

The Green Party also believes that natural forests in UK should be hugely expanded.
All woodland needs to be managed correctly to increase biodiversity.

The Green Party believes that all peatland needs to be re-wetted to increase biodiversity, as well as making a big contribution to reducing UK's carbon emissions.

The Agriculture Development Advisory Service (part of the Office for Environmental Protection) assessment is that current agri-environment schemes will only reduce nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment pollution by 3 -6%, way below the government target of a 40% reduction from 2018 to 2038.

The UK Committee on Climate Change and scientists highlight a significant gap between current biodiversity targets and what's needed to address the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. On top of that progress is not even meeting the targets.

Stewardship requirements will be dovetailed with other environmental requirements applying landowners.

Stewardship requirements will be reasonable and affordable and support will be available. It will make sure that there are no ‘gaps’ such as the current gaps in regulations that enable the pollution of our rivers.

The government’s approach shows no consideration of how we need to change how we source many of our day-to-day products e.g. building materials.

The government’s approach to providing land for nature is also fundamentally at odds with the Green Party’s (which is based on the UN definitions in treaties our government has signed up to, plus advice from the Wildlife Trusts).
