I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo intentionally made their early consoles look more "serious" to avoid association with the video game crash of the early 80s. They wanted them to look like VHS players more than toys. Guess it didn't work with you.

I remember something about master Roshi teaching him to read with less than wholesome material, not sure if that's canon. Also might only be in the localization I watched, but he mentioned not liking the drinks labeled "beer" during his trip to namek.
