So yes, we took the high road—and maybe it’s lonelier up here. But in the end, we’d rather lose a district than lose our soul. Because if we sacrifice our principles to chase temporary power, then we’re no better than the party that stormed the Capitol when it didn’t get its way.

Conservatives keep invoking it like it’s some magic spell that could undo centuries of systemic injustice and prevent gun violence. It didn’t. It won’t. What it did do was terrorize communities of color while doing nothing to prevent tragedies like the one we’re mourning now.

Democrats believe in laws, yes—but laws rooted in dignity, justice, and due process. We believe that no child should be afraid to walk home from baseball practice. That a coach shouldn’t have to risk his life to protect the lives of children from their own government.

If Bove had any proximity to decisions about delaying or redacting the Epstein files if he knows who made those calls, or why then that’s not just a relevant question. It’s a threshold question. If the Senate refuses to ask it they’re not just overlooking a detail. They’re complicit in the cover-up.

Let’s dispense with the charade. If you truly have “nothing to do” with Epstein, then you welcome the investigation. You release the logs, the footage, the depositions. You don’t panic-tweet. You don’t threaten retaliation. And you sure as hell don’t play the victim!

That is not a political spat. That is not tabloid drama. That is the rhetoric of dictators, not democratically elected leaders. If our media covers it with a smirk and a shrug as another episode in the ongoing reality show of American decline then they are complicit in normalizing authoritarianism.
