'Lord Emsworth was 'registering' interest - interest which, he perceived from the first instant, would have to be completely simulated; for instinct told him, as Mr Peters began to talk, that he was about to be bored as he had seldom been bored in his life.'

At a friend’s birthday, I introduced myself to their friends by asking if they were pro- or anti- the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. They reacted with some uncertainty, but seemed to feel the culpability for any resulting awkwardness lay with me…

One day, I told Elspeth her sparkly top made her look like one of those old ladies on a night out in London. Back-tracking was necessary but not sufficient.

Later that day, she showed me the book she’d been lent – and strongly recommended – by her host the previous evening: How to have Feminist Sex

One day, trying to fill up dead time when I worked in a bank, I went down to the cafeteria with a colleague to hunt and gather free food. There was no food, but instead a large glass container of water with floating lemons and limes.

I wished to progress my five-a-day and set course for the jug…

Fun to ponder this stuff - I’m absolutely no expert in literary criticism, but would wonder whether ‘jerk’ is perhaps too strong a word here?
And once you get to the very good stuff, everyone is either a moron, a jerk, or both. Even Jeeves, though omniscient, has no problem causing people all sorts of distress just to enact a plan. It's when Wodehouse is trying to write with ANY sincerity that he loses you.
