One of the most important labor struggles in China occurred at Tonghua Steel, which had been a state-owned steelworks in Jilin Province. In 2005, it was privatized and its name changed to Jianlong; 24,000 of its 36,000 workers lost their jobs and related benefits, migrant laborers were hired for half the previous workers' wages, the new management got big bonuses, and new legislation allowed for an array of sanctions and punishments for unruly workers. From 2007, there was increased unrest among the workers, and in July 2009 they went on strike. When a senior manager threatened to fire the entire workforce, he was attacked and beaten to death The police, present with thousands of officers, did not dare intervene. After this, there were no more privatizations in Jilin Province.

During his time in England, Ho Chi Minh became aware of the Irish liberation struggle and studied it with great interest. When he learned of the death of a Sinn Féin hunger strik er, he reportedly wept at the sacrifice the man had made for his country and proclaimed: "A nation which has such citizens will never surren- der."

"And most important of all! Every industrial and commercial centre in England now pos- sesses a working class divided into two hos tile camps, English proletarians and Irish proletarians. The ordinary English worker hates the Irish worker as a competitor who lowers his standard of life. In relation to the Irish worker he feels himself a member of the ruling nation and so turns himself into a tool of the aristocrats and capitalists of his coun try against Ireland, thus strengthening their domination over himself. He cherishes reli- gious, social, and national prejudices against the Irish worker. His attitude towards him is much the same as that of the 'poor whites' to the 'niggers' in the former slave states of the USA. The Irishman pays him back with inter- est in his own money. He sees in the English worker at once the accomplice and the stupid tool of the English rule in Ireland. This antagonism is the secret of the impotence of the English working class, despite its organi- sation. It is the secret by which the capitalist class maintains its power. And that class is fully aware of it… Therefore to hasten the social revolution in England is the most important object of the International Work- ingmen's Association. The sole means of has. tening it is to make Ireland independent. Hence it is the task of the International every- where to put the conflict between England and Ireland in the foreground, and every- where to side openly with Ireland. And it is the special task of the Central Council in Lon- don to awaken a consciousness in the English workers that for them the national emanci- pation of Ireland is no question of abstract justice or humanitarian sentiment but the first condition of their own social emancipa- tion."
