They want the monetary benefits of research to only accrue to them. Instead of NOAA issuing weather data and forecasts for free, SpaceX or Palantir can charge an arm and a leg for it. Same with drug development and every other industry with public/private partnerships now

Bottom line, the Democrats need to figure out ways to compete in the South, Mountain West, or Great Plains. They don't right now, and that puts a hard cap of about 52 in the Senate if everything goes perfectly, which it rarely does. They've got to expand the map! 7/x
