1999: the first Automated Passenger Counter (APC) is installed on 60 LA Metro buses. The APCs work in conjunction with GPS software to pinpoint the location of each stop and count the number of boardings.

The LA Railway system operated frequent and local streetcar service within the City of Los Angeles, as a complement to Pacific Electric "Red Car" system, which operated more of an interurban commuter system of streetcars.

1976: Los Angeles County Supervisor Baxter Ward proposes a "new red car system" for Los Angeles County. The proposal would use a 244-County-wide rail network to bring rapid transit back to Los Angeles, only 13 years after the city's famous streetcar system went completely out of service.

1885: The Second Street Cable Railroad is incorporated.

That's right! For a few years, LA actually had cable car service operating on 2nd Street, from Hope St. to Broadway (then known as Fort St.)

The Pacific Electric Railway takes over the LA & Pasadena Electric Railway in 1902 and begins operating a new Pasadena "Short Line," shortening the line to terminate in South Pasadena instead.
