Yeah!! It‘s an odd phenomenon, but many people that put themselves in a place of responsibility to educate others in the “save the bees” movement don’t actually know what bees need conserving, which is an issue! =>

Also this is a great paper explaining the negative impact HBs have on native bee populations!

Oh!!! I forgot to add that the reason we have euro HBs here is because back when the Americas were being colonized, Europeans brought over a lot of non-native plants along with European honeybee hives! So humans brought them here, they did not naturally get here which is !!! So fun !!!

Anyway! Our native bees have coevolved with our native plant species (both of which rely on eo for survival) so encouraging our native bees helps encourage our native plants (both are important for our ecosystem to remain healthy/diverse).

With human urbanization/disturbance (building roads and disturbing the land in other ways) there is already less natural habitat and therefore less resources for native bees. This issue not only reduces floral resources but also nesting habitat and other important factors native bees need to survive
October 25, 2025 at 2:17 AM
I’m defining resource strain as a loss of available floral resources due to competition (this means less pollen and nectar for our native bees) in already strained ecosystems.
October 25, 2025 at 2:17 AM
This is an issue as these people are encouraging/growing populations of a non-native species (which many, including myself, argue the euro HB to be invasive) and increasing resource strain on our native bees.
October 25, 2025 at 2:17 AM
These are all very broad strokes, but I’m just trying to articulate that our native bees are completely different than euro HBs.

So because many people are misinformed about which bees need attention, many will start beekeeping as a way to “help save the bees”.

Most of our native bees are solitary. They do not have huge nests, large honey reserves, nor do they have large armadas of workers collecting pollen/nectar. Bumblebees are fairly eusocial (queen, workers, large-ish hive, etc.) but they are nothing like euro HBs.
October 25, 2025 at 2:17 AM
Okay yeah!! I’ll try and keep this concise so I’m not going to dive into differences in eusociality and other factors that set honeybees apart from native bees but just know that 99% of what you know about euro honeybees (euro HBs) is mostly not applicable to our (north american) native bees.

About the honeybee part? :0

Going to have a whole other portion of the QR code link talking about why you shouldn’t give a fuck about catering to honeybees in your yard (I’m in North America so fuck the honeybees)

Break for wildlife. break for the fucking squirrels, at least try please
