WB is notoriously litigious. They love to sue anyone and everyone they can. The system is niche! Sure! But it also enhances games in its niche by a lot, and the devs that would use it are scared off by notorious evil corporation Warner Brothers.

Sue you the moment you find marginal success even if your system isn't actually all that similar, and then use their immeasurable wealth to wait until they either win or you can't feed your family anymore because of the legal debt.

The issue is more that they stopped basically any and all advancement into similar systems. Not because it would violate the patent, but because Warner brothers would sue people anyways until they either won the case or whoever they were using ran out of money. So. Yeah. It does kinda stop that.
