I think its even like mentioned in the foreword or the backside of the book, not sure but it is mentioned a lot. And the book was published in the 80’s before the berlin wall fell so you can add that context on top of that.

The bit isnt always harmful. Good equestrians know their horses well enough and know what type of bit fits them. Or they go bitless.

Know bits? Those rings you often see at the corners of a horse mouth? Yeah those often create pain in the horse mouth. Making the horse open the mouth, the riders dont want this since it makes it harder to use the bit to communicate w the horse. So some put tight nosebands forcing the mouth shut.
