Thank you to everyone who got a copy of the mmouth tape! With your contributions, we were able to raise $115 to donate to the Central Virginia Community Support Fund in an effort to offer aid to individuals and families in the wake of the ongoing havoc being wrought in our streets and communities.

MMOUTH 01 is the haunting debut from mmouth, an ambient project conceived by XTina Marie that centers around the human voice. Composed using polyphonic vocal arrangements and sparse, droning synth beds, the work draws inspiration from Medieval and Renaissance choral traditions, as well as contemporary ambient music. Written and recorded from 2020–2021, the move to compose for voice was the result of wrist damage that made it difficult for XTina to play guitar, her previous songwriting tool of choice. “I was interested in exploring my voice as an instrument and discovering if I could create something dynamic with my mouth alone. I didn’t expect to write an EP, but it became so invigorating that it evolved into something more than just an experiment.” The EP greets the listener with the welcoming blooms of “now i am a flower”. Combining acrobatic melisma with a suspended tone, the consonant cascades usher in a feeling of daybreak—though a deeply held pain can also be felt as XTina recites: now i am a flower pretty, but still waiting to wilt hanging bells that chime– trapped in the torture of time This uneasiness seeps into “mouth I :: mourning”, the first of a pair of non-lyrical songs that XTina describes as exercises in emoting with voice only, “expressing...without using words at all.” Following this, the liturgical “mary’s holy teeth” invites the listener to join in communion, though its enveloping warmth beguiles an unnerving threat in its sole lyric: Meet me in the mouth of God: gripped between Mary’s holy teeth. The EP’s longest song, “unholy & untied”, was the last piece written with guitar before XTina switched to focusing on vocal composition, and, perhaps as a result, features a more conventional song structure and lush arrangement. The lyrics conjure horror-like imagery that tell a concise story of painful rejection: took off the body gave you the bones you shut down - took off the face gave you the brains you pulled out By contrast, the penultimate “clipped wings/dark bed” is stark and unrushed. I clipped my wings to nest in the dark bed of love is sung in long, drawn out phrases, punctuated by bouts of equally sustained silence. The piece eventually concludes in a blossoming hymnal harmony—a fleeting moment representing the last glimmer of light before the second non-lyrical piece, “mouth II :: yearning”, closes the EP. With its distraught wails and ominous drone, this disconcerting conclusion may leave the listener feeling unsettled, but the work is meant to be metamorphic. “The hope for my art is that it allows me to face struggles and transform them into something beautiful I can put back into the universe.” — MMOUTH 01 is available now for streaming and download.
