I lived for two amazing issues in LA and Toronto in the first half of 2000 and the election radicalized me into being again. Anti fascist with art and travel leanings.

Ok, now that the first draft of my novel is finished, I was encouraged to make a synopsis of it to help me with the second draft I’m gonna start in October. Hope to have this novel on Amazon by Xmas time.

The Synopsis I am writing this from somewhere other than where most of the story took place. I could still be in danger but I don't know, but I do know I want to get my story down before something happens to me. I worked with software developers and we ran into some trouble that led to people dying and now I'm essentially exiled but as the reader you won't know where yet because that information is redacted. They are worried about my safety, I guess. But if I had to say, I guess it all started in Liverpool. Carl, the protagonist, is at Anfield in Liverpool with a customer when he makes friends with a Danish NATO soldier named Thor. The three bond over football and antifascism and even go out the next night drinking and singing karaoke. Life feels grand, and then when he gets back to Freiburg, there is the first inkling that there might be a problem. The international software has lost of their contracts to a competitor and they are shocked but not worried. Carl's neighbor, Mattie, a nearly ninety-year old woman who lives below him, is introduced to the story, as if Muschi, his cat. Carl and Mattie bond more than seemed possible and Carl's relationship with his cat is more like two cats. He forgets to check on his cat and his cat doesn't seem to mind. The situation at work requires that Carl and one of his colleagues Milo, head off to Tallinn to see if they can stave off the cancellation of their company's contract. They are summarily rejected and are confused. They meet up with one of the Estonian company's reps in the Russian part of town and he's shitting himself and they can't figure out why. It's a dissatisfying trip in general and in the back of his mind, Carl is worried about Mattie, who is in the hospital. It stirs something in Carl that is hard to understand, but as a reader we slowly begin to understand that she is the closest thing to family for him. The mood at the company is also changing. Their boss Reinhard starts being a dick out of nowhere and no one understands why beyond that the loss of the contracts is putting a stress on the finances of his exotic lifestyle, but the team can't believe that's what it is. Another business trip to Istanbul with Zeynep goes poorly as well. They are barely allowed into the company and are escorted out without as much as an explanation. They spend the day trying to decide what to do and end up spending time with a friend of hers, Izzet. They discuss politics and life in general. This part also hopefully helps show another aspect of Europe from "outside" Europe, how its viewed from those who feel part of it. The boss does not handle the new rejection well and it sends the team spirally a bit and they refocus their effort to figure out what is going on. Another trip to another customer, this time to Genoa, Italy is necessary. He goes with his best developer, Gianfranco, who happens to be the nephew of the owner of the software company in Genoa. There they get more first-hand information on what is going on. Genie's uncle Luigi is being blackmailed for being gay but he has no idea how these people find out. Carl thinks it's ridiculous to worry about that information coming out but he also recognizes that he's not a macho Italian guy and so he can't relate. It somehow has something do with them losing the software contracts but they can't figure out how. They do some rummaging around and then Genie makes a discovery. It has something to do with the demo software that the Russian competitor gives them. They bring Luigi's laptop back with them as a machine they can investigate on. It is around this time that one of their colleagues is attacked while riding his bike, nearly run over by some guys in a black Mercedes. It adds tension to the team, who should be remembered are foreigner software developers, not a motorcycle gang or something. He encourages the team to undertake a hackathon, working together on various aspects of the Russian competitor's software to figure out its weaknesses. At the same time, he encouraged Bobby, who has by this time also been affected by the Russian software and is worried about what could happen to him, to come to Freiburg. His family is from there so it's an easy decision for him. Carl also invites Thor because he knows that Thor is a man of action, something a roomful of bewildered software developers needed badly. Bobby helps with the hackathon and soon they can see out the Russian IT guy's webcam. They can see his face and even out the window, where they notice the Russians are staying near the old air traffic tower. Thor sets out to find it exactly. Some time later, they see Thor climbing the ladder up the ladder of the tower. They are amazed, convinced the area is closed off by barbed wire and he has managed to get in and climb up. Thor even waves to them from his location. It helps them pinpoint where their enemies are. Unfortunately, the Russians also get wind that their Freiburg cashcow is starting to act up and so they plan to send some of their guy's over to the Profware Solutions building to confront the developers. Carl tells the team they will reconvene at his apartment to stay safe. While cramped in Carl's smallish apartment, Thor arrives with the unbelievable news told in a very casual manner that he had killed one of the Russian guys and tossed the dead guy's cell phone into the river near where they now sat. Everyone got up to leave, worried that their sedentary life as a software developer was changing into something else. They made plans to meet again at his place to work for a few hours and see if they can't kill the malware that had been the bane of their existence for months. They manage to infect the malware so that its inoperable but that also leads to the Russians coming to look for them so they have to bail on Carl's place. On the way to the airport, the three of them are attacked by some Russians while driving on the French side of the Rhine River, leading to a climax of a shootout and stabbing on a dirt road next to the river. Carl and Bobby slink off in his mom's damaged car, leaving Thor to 'take care of it'. Carl leaves Bobby at the airport and is told to leave Bobby's mom's car there too. He will just plan to buy her a new one, he tells Carl, as they part. Once home, Carl notices a letter in his mailbox. It is from the foreign office and it is about his passport. The next morning, he goes dressed up in a cowboy shirt for his appointment and stakes it out to make sure he's safe, only to be hit on the back of the head by a blunt instrument. He wakes up, disoriented and unsure of where he is. Once up, he meets Interpol Senior Security Agent Brian Blume, who explains to him what happened. The Russians had been waiting for him and the agent and his team had rescued Carl. There is good news and bad news. The Russians have been taken into custody and shouldn't be a problem. Carl is handed a German passport, his keenest desire in the world, only to be told that he cannot return to Germany for five years and one year to France or the accessory to murder charges they swept aside will come rushing back. Carl is free, but unable to go to the one place he had called home for fifteen years. He finishes his pastry, secures his new passport and walks out of an Italian café early in the

This is why the summer issue of lagniappe is going to come out as the Fall issue. I’ve written 100,000+ words on a new novel in the last 4 months and it’s taking all my artistic energy to try and get through the first draft before I work on the next issue of lagniappe. I hope y’all understand…

Update: summer issue of lagniappe may be on hold. I’ve been working hard on a novel the past few months and am planning to go to the States in 3 weeks & won’t be able to finish the issue before then anyway. Still have about 40 copies of the spring issue if anyone is interested. I’ll trade zines too

I’ve given out ~ 10 copies of my fanzine the past couple months to people from Palestine, Switzerland, Libya, Romania, Ireland, Vietnam. Feels good spreading the word and reminding those with latent antifascism that it’s time to unlock that side of themselves like a secret level in a video game.

I'm a white guy living in Koreatown.

If I encounter these goons. Do I just record them quietly? Do I heckle them?

I have a loud voice, but otherwise, I'm as intimidating as a baby turtle on its' back.

My neighborhood is mostly immigrants. I want to help without being stupid or escalating.

How I became an LGBT ally as a cis suburban kid from my fanzine @lagniappefanzine.bsky.social
Some of the text. How I became a LGBTQ ally I grew up in sheltered, suburban Orange County, California in the 1980s. At 11, my parents told me that my aunt's friend who was coming again for Christmas wasnt just her friend or roommate. i remember being in my bed with my mom sitting on the edge and my dad standing behind her. They wanted to make sure that I was okay with that information. I gave a quick answer that that was fine with me, no big deal but also felt it was something I was allowed to not be ok with. That made it even easier for it to be no big deal. What I wouldn't know for decades is that my mom herself felt uncomfortable about having a lesbian sister at the time but shows what a good mom I have, even though she herself felt that discomfort she didn't give me that feeling whatsoever, my folks presented it to me totally neutrally for me. Fast forward to living in LA in the late 1990s, close to West Hollywood, aka Boystown, where Santa Monica Boulevard was lined with fun, bright street cafes with the most colorful and less clad walking up and down the street. It never bothered me. No one ever made me feel uncomfortable or unsafe. It was around that time I meet the two transpeople in my family. and they helped make it obvious to me that it was nothing for me to worry about, in fact, something to celebrate because both individuals truty became themselves once they had transitioned. Anyone who had known them before and after could only come to the conclusion that this was the best decision they had made in their lives and lived it every day. There was the Christopher Street Parade in Toronto, summer 2000, later memoralized it in parts of my second novel, Using Toonies. The pure joy everyone had being in the parade, it was hard to know what to hate about it. I have since been to gay pride parades in Germany and
