We’ve gone solar! I’ve wanted to for so long & finally brought my partner round. We installed 27 2.3m x 1.1m panels on our northfacing (right), westfacing (left) & eastfacing roofs; plus 2 10kW batteries. Even with today’s clouds we are generating all the power we need & charging up the batteries.🥳

While it’s fine that @gov.je have posted on Xitter to let the right-wingers know about the severe wind that is hitting the Islands tonight & Thu, it would be great if they used their account here on Bluesky to also warn the majority of us, who don’t twit. Thanks @metoffice.gov.uk for including us

Had a few days in London & visited places inspired by reading @benaaronovitch.bsky.social Rivers of London:
Regent’s Park & canal (no Melvin and Goddess)
Kew Gardens (did Peter do this to the tree)
Grand Union canal at Kensal Green Cemetery (no Francesca)
Hampstead Heath (squirrels but no foxes)

Passing through London & into @goshcomics.bsky.social to pick up the first issue of Expanse A Little Death by @andydiggle.bsky.social & Wes Chatham. It was the last copy, so super chuffed. I think issue 2 comes out when I am going back through London😀… or it comes out the day I am at the airport😢.

Where I live in the British isles the latest Covid vaccine is only available free to certain groups & there is no way to get it privately. But in the UK, Boots offer a private service & as I was passing through London I booked myself in & got the latest vaccine. Sore arm but very pleased 😀💪

I think you used the wrong picture. Isn’t this the one that should lead the story?

The temperature was very summery for my walk this afternoon but the colours in the lanes were definitely autumn. A beautiful time of year.

My copy of @hannahritchie.bsky.social Clearing the Air arrived and I can’t wait to start reading it. No cute cats to keep me company while I do so, alas. 😿

My lovely copy of Who Killed Nessie just arrived. Started reading it and it’s such fun. Great work by @rachaelsmith.bsky.social and @paulcornell (who’s blocking me? What did I do? 😳). But that doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of it. 😀

Look what’s just arrived on my Kobo! 😀 Can’t wait to start reading The Shattering Peace and see what happens next in The Old Man’s War universe. @scalzi.com

My super-cute Tendi and Rutherford-inspired hats by @heninahat.bsky.social arrived. While awaiting the weather to wear them, they have pride of place on one of my Star Trek shelves.

Jersey’s version of the wheat fields of the Canadian prairies, aglow in the sunshine on a beautiful, though windy, day. 🤩

Look what arrived in the post today — @brittlestar.com Lessons from Cats for Surviving Fascism. Made me chuckle and made me think.

It also made me realise that despite growing up in a doggie household, my father brought me up to be a cat. Thanks, Dad. 🥰

A lovely mackerel sky at the end of a hot sunny day here in Jersey. It portends rain, which the forecast says we are due by morning. 🌧️🤞

These spots have appeared (imaged this morning at 10:40 BST). Are they the ones responsible for that stunning display?
August 24, 2025 at 9:42 AM
Having seen the red skies at night, partly due to Saharan sand, I noticed that a water-filled stone trough now has a red dusty residue which has settled to the bottom. Is this likely to be Saharan sand that fell from the sky or something in the borehole water where we are (Jersey, CI)?

My copy just arrived! 😀 It was my break, so I read the first chapter, but it was short, so read the second, third, fourth … I don’t work afternoons, so that’s this afternoon sorted out & Saturday. 😆 What better way to hide from the heat than snuggled down with a new book.

And book 2 is out when?
August 15, 2025 at 9:28 AM
I’ve just finished rereading @naomialderman.bsky.social ‘s book The Future. Such a well written book and a great read. Now if someone can just get a few of the tech billionaires on the same plane, you know your mission! 😀

I know I shouldn’t be surprised but having moved my money out of #HSBC & emailed to say I was doing so to protest their environment policies, their reply was ‘sorry our policies are causing you inconvenience’! Cos helping fossil fuels burn the planet is an ‘inconvenience’! They really don’t give a 💩

A wonderful parade of sunspots today.

Taken at 15:30 BST in Jersey; colour image straight from my @unistellar.bsky.social Odyssey and a mono version with some light post-processing on my phone (I think the latter shows more detail 🤔)

Saw this gorgeous dragonfly on our walk through the lanes this afternoon. Definitely living up to the dragon part of its name — ca 7 cm / 3 in long!

#HillfortsWednesday Happiness is looking out your hotel window & finding out the nearby Roman fort/fortlet is in fact just across the road! The raised banks marking Castleshaw Roman fortlet were clearly visible from my room. I was out of the hotel & bouncing excitably down the lane in no time. 🥰

In London tonight on my way home & it coincided with favourite author @benaaronovitch.bsky.social signing his new book. Great to get the chance to thank him for featuring less known places in London — the Silver Vaults had a run on fox figures; the Mail Rail was such fun; so many places to visit.😀
