Currently Hazmat crews are tackling the toxic waste left by the LA fires. This is often the work that the public does not hear about after a natural disaster, the work done by scientists to reduce human health risks after exposure to hazardous waste.

#Georgia has been certified malaria-free by WHO, following a nearly century-long effort.
Georgia remained malaria-free for 25 years, but by 2002, malaria had reemerged in the country with 474 cases reported.
Now, Georgia joins the ranks of 45 countries & 1 territory that have achieved this milestone

In some good news, a study that surveyed respondents from 68 countries on their trust in scientists found that there is NOT a widespread lack of trust of scientists. I think as scientists we do need to engage more with the public to build trust in those populations that remain skeptical of science.

What is the state of trust in scientists around the world? To answer this question, the authors surveyed 71,922 respondents in 68 countries and found that trust in scientists is moderately high.

While I love learning what archeologists unearth in their research in Egypt (I’ve always been fascinated with Ancient Egyptian culture) I’m conflicted because it is disturbing another person’s final resting place.

Women in a study cohort of people aged 40-60 who included short bursts of intense physical activity saw their risks of major cardiovascular drop 45%. It’s nice to know those short bursts of physical activity that I & many other women I know get are actually useful 🤣. #science

I’m hoping that Telehealth for Medicare patients can get extended in the next year to continue to provide access to healthcare to the Medicare patients in rural areas. It’s been shown that Telehealth has helped to fill in gaps for the lack of access to healthcare. #telehealth
Telehealth helps people get health care, but access may soon be in limbo
COVID-era telehealth laws made health care more accessible for rural patients, but telehealth might not be as easy to access next year.

This article mentions that past architectural designs like the Taos Pueblos could be used in the future to help keep homes cool. I think it would be so cool if we could not only have some eco friendly architectural housing designs but also housing that isn’t all drab and cookie cutter.
To stay cool, some future homes may build on past power-free tech
Accordion-pleated walls and other heat-managing structures could cool homes in hot, dry places naturally — without electricity.

This article focused on public health in 2024 & it looks like we have a lot of work to do. Dengue & bird flu are on the rise in the Americas, climatic changes are increasing heat related injuries, & clean drinking water is inaccessible in multiple places around the world. I’m ready to work in 2025.
Here's how public health fared in 2024
Viral outbreaks, extreme heat and access to clean water are among the year’s big public health headlines.

Mayotte cyclone has health services in ruin due to weather damages. While medical supplies can be air lifted to the territory, I wonder if there are other ways that scientists can help. Would mobile health clinics be the answer or working toward building climate resilient infrastructure be better?

It seems like malaria cases have risen over the past few years due to an increase in climate disasters and rising resistance to insecticides. I know the climate crisis is creating a breeding ground for mosquitos due to an increase in temps and flooding. We really need to create new solutions.

I think this article highlights an aspect of public health that many people forget which is the mental health toll that first responders face after a natural disaster. I think in the future there will be a need for more psychologists to address this issue due to an increase in weather variability.
In mountain areas flooded by Hurricane Helene, these health risks are rising
Contaminated water is one of the leading health risks, but residents also face harm to mental health, stress that exacerbates chronic diseases and several other threats.

I think one of the hardest parts of science communication is building the trust between scientists and the public. Sometimes the science moves faster than communication can be released. Which leads to distrust from the public. This nature article is interesting.
