A British businessman and one-time Tory election candidate is working with the Kremlin to try to bring “anti-woke” westerners to live in Russia.
Philip Hutchinson moved to Moscow this year on a “shared values” visa introduced by Russia to “provide humanitarian support to people who share traditional Russian spiritual and moral values”.
The visa scheme, which offers a three-year temporary residence, is open to citizens of 47 countries that Russia considers unfriendly, including Britain, the US and most of the EU.
Hutchinson, who previously ran a property company and stood as a Conservative in last year’s council elections in Winchester, is working to help disaffected westerners apply for the visa.
His company, Moscow Connect, is an official partner of Welcome To Russia, the public face of the visa scheme, which is run by Maria Butina, a Russian MP who in 2018 was convicted of spying in America.
Hutchinson said that the company, which he co-founded with Guy Eames, a fellow Briton, is also partnered with the Russian ministry of foreign affairs.
Asked whether or not his business was being funded by the Russian government, Hutchinson declined to answer, saying: “I don’t want MI6 [on] my back wondering what I’m doing. And I don’t want to openly break UK sanctions against Russia as a British citizen.”Hutchinson, 35, who is originally from Brentwood in Essex, has appeared on state media favourably comparing Russia to the UK on issues of crime, immigration and gender policy
