I know this pain.

I absolutely loved this entire album. I bought the cassette when I was about 10 (still have it) and played it lots. Lots of it was over my head at the time, but I definitely grew into understanding it by my early teens.

And having gotten into Fellini as a teenager, I completely agree with your comparison with Satryicon.

There were at least two versions of the video. The infamous one that got banned and a more MTV friendly version, which I remember from when I was a kid. I saw the more infamous version as a teenager and was like, 'That's it?'. It just didn't seem as controversial as adults made it sound.

Having grown up in a big city, I moved to a town when I moved to the UK and soon realised I was still spending most of my time in the city...I only stayed there as long as I did to help out my friends with their daughter, and moved back to city living once she was settled in full time school.

That's something I can do here. 12 minute train to Barnt Green, 5 minute walk across the village and in countryside. Or 16 minutes to Alvechurch and a 2 minute walk from the station. Good pubs in both villages too. I'm very lucky in that regard.

And still bloody expensive.

I grew up in Etobicoke, which is proper suburban. End of the subway line, then unreliable bus service. And still full of high rises. (I have about as much nostalgia for high rise living as I do for shovelling snow)

Bristol has become really expensive in recent years

And I can walk to things, get to the city centre on the train in 15 minutes and out of the city completely out of the city by train or car in 10 minutes. In Toronto, I'd be living in suburbia (who can afford downtown?) and would still have at least an hour's drive to get out of the urban sprawl
September 19, 2025 at 9:09 PM
It's far more sensible at the moment. In Toronto I'd be in a rented high-rise flat share. With a professional job. In Brum, I own my own house (okay, the mortgage company owns most of it, but I own a decent chunk despite having to start over).
September 19, 2025 at 9:07 PM
And people ask why I would never move back there.

I live in the UK and asked for caulk in the equivalent to Home Depot. Cue confused look and stifled giggles from the staff, especially with my Canadian pronunciation. They call it 'silicone sealant' here 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

But living there is another matter all together

What would be helpful with this is screening for genetic and/or chromosomal conditions early on. There are kids I work with who wait years to see a geneticist to rule in or out conditions, which means huge delays in getting needed support, missing crucial developmental windows.

Whenever people say 'eat what your great-grandparents ate', my response is 'You mean sweetened condensed milk, Weiner's from a tin and sugar sandwiches?', because that's what my grandmother ate growing up as one of 8 children in dire rural poverty. And plenty of homemade moonshine for their father.
