Book worm, garden nerd, nature nut. I also cook a bit
🌱🪶 I have a dilemma. I built a custom orchid growing/display bench on my balcony. Birds (presumably blackbirds) have uprooted and/or knocked over orchids. Made a heck of a mess. However one is building a nest in the back corner. How do I protect my orchids without making an avian family homeless?

In about two hours, the neighbours will all be drooling so much they’ll forget I’m the “eccentric next-door”. Even if my reputation is not redeemed, we’ll be replete with Beef ‘n Guinness stew

Our brief, intense Autumn has played her part, now it’s time for Winter’s players to take the stage. Fungi breaking down the leaf carpet so that Spring can shine in turn. 🌱

Spent my day off cleaning up some very overgrown pots in preparation for winter and found these gorgeous Schlumbergia happily showing off 🌱

Know your enemy. These are Mealy Bugs. They suck the life out of our botanical friends every bit as hungrily as a vampire would us. 🌱

A Zygopetalum orchid I was given as a gift around 10 years ago. Her perfume is just as gorgeous as her blossoms 🌱

I want to see more #butterflies and #bees in my life. I’m told that Monarda/Betgamot is enticing for nectar feeding bugs .. kinda attractive to this human too! I love that the flowers look like tiny open mouths giving winged visitors a convenient landing pad to rest on while they feed 🌱

In Australia we have gorgeous #beetles that appear at the beginning of Summer. Christmas Beetles .. a sort of living decoration in golds, purples and this green one I found while weeding 🌱

I won’t get a lot of fruit from these peach and nectarine trees because it was a dry winter and the birds are hungry/thirsty. I’m ok with that because they make a gorgeous “shade house” protecting orchids, bromeliads, fuscia, ferns and “indoor” plants that would shrivel in the Summer sun. 🌱

Over the years I’ve grown apples, nectarine, peach, loquat, mandarins, lemon, passion fruit, tamarillo, icecream bean and curry tree from seed. If I eat the fruit, I plant the seed. I’ve grown dozens of others from cuttings. Here’s my young peach ..

Good morning Blue Sky. I thought I’d share a dawn sky.

Those who know me from the bird-site or IRL are familiar with my terrible photos of tasty food. Time for me to make good on my promise that I cook “a bit”. This is my version of chicken pot pie. Local extra smoky ham, wild mushrooms and (almost too much) garlic.

A quick google says it’s the same genus, different species

When I was a small child, I could never resist “popping” fuscia buds in Gran’s garden. My Mother, would tell me off. Gran would whisper that she liked to do it too. It was a race to see who popped them first. Today marks 40 years since she passed. These are for you Gran 🌱

I’ve encouraged Viola tricolor (Wild Pansy) to self seed everywhere in my garden. The joy I get from seeing their little faces nodding in the breeze confirms their antique name of “Hearts ease”

Another of the nameless, neglected orphan bulbs that followed me home has flowered. Who would leave this beauty languishing in a shelf? 🌱

Or if flashy cultivars are not your thing, Iris chrysographes (the Black Iris) might be. 🌱

I know I’m late to the party, but if we’re showing off black flowers for Black Friday .. how about irises? Meet the gorgeous tall bearded “Midnight Oil” 🌱
