Amidst uncertainty, nature reminds us: strength is in solidarity, beauty in complexity, & survival in togetherness. Even when the surface is shaken, we are steadied by what lies beneath.

Next time you walk a forest path, remember the unseen forces that bind it all & the quiet ties that hold us too.

For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples of the PNW have used Dicentra formosa medicinally. In BC, the Stó꞉lō Peoples use it to treat intestinal worms & toothaches.

⚠️ This plant contains toxic compounds & must be prepared properly. Respect Indigenous knowledge.

💕 Happy VDay! We’re celebrating connection & the beauty of nature by learning more about perennial native wildflower Dicentra formosa or Pacific bleeding heart.

In Hul’q’umi’num, one our our local Indigenous languages, it is called sp’eq’ums tu ‘ulhqi’ meaning “snake flower” 🐍

As we celebrate the Year of the Snake, let's talk about these adaptable reptiles. On Vancouver Island, we have 3 native garter snake species:

🐍 Common Garter Snake
🐍 Northwestern Garter Snake
🐍 Terrestrial Garter Snake

As predator and prey, garter snakes help maintain balance in local food webs.

"Mom, is snow good for the community?"

My 6-year-old’s question made me pause. I don't like snow or the cold but, as we talked, my mindset started to shift. Snow shapes our communities in ways I don’t always fully appreciate.

What better time than now, while so many of us in Canada are bristling at the suggestion of being annexed, to support Indigenous Sovereignty by learning about community-led and culturally-aligned design approaches to housing (a human right).
