My whole life flashed in front of me. Gee it was boring

On Woiwurrung land; Essendon FC; Test cricket; Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dylan and what radiates out from there; History; Movies; Unions; Unapologetic and uncompromising Leftist politics.
During chemotherapy session 4, 2wks ago. Diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and metastasized bone cancer across the pelvis in late July. Completed a course of radiation therapy - CT Scan last week indicates a 30% reduction in the cancer cell mass in the lungs and no apparent growth in the pelvis

John and Elise were able to bring our first grandchild Edward Kevin Gardiner home yesterday at just two weeks old. Who can tell at this early stage whether he's inherited any interests from the rest of us?

Correct, Dave. And it's ever been thus. US press owners in early 20thC were shocked at how easily Australian press owners had been able to establish monopolies and duopolies. This 2-vol history by Sally Young is essential, entertaining and depressing reading

Tonight it was Ch9's turn to not be able to differentiate between members of the Beach Boys: a photo of Carl Wilson (d.1998) is used to promote an upcoming today interview with Al Jardine about the recent death of Brian Wilson

Don't be too critical of Ch7 News - technically, they're correct. Carl Wilson died in 1998

This article by Richard Flanagan in yesterday's Saturday Paper will give you all of the background and insightful analysis that no AFLmedia commentator ever would regarding the Tasmanian political and football situation. There's some zooming and scrolling to be done but it'll be worth it.

When you read a history of media ownership and the power and influence of media owners to find that it's ever been thus. Oh, and that the interests of mining companies and banks have always been hand-in-glove with the press, against the public interest. It's both illuminating and depressing

I know this is a bit last week but did anyone question Sussan Ley's claim about having been a punk? I've done google image searches on Sussan Ley punk; young; and ANU. This is the earliest photo of Ley that came up, from 2001, and really she looks about as punk as Flo Bjelke-Petersen

Maybe she's talking about this sort of thing, I dunno

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, I've been blocked by David Leyonhjelm. What sort of person would you have to be to NOT to be blocked by him?

BA Santamaria's Point of View, a 7-min bombastic, McCarthyist-flavoured harangue from ol' Bob, Sunday mornings on Ch9 1963-1991, was only ever watched by people who couldn't be stuffed getting up to change the channel or later, reach for the remote. Don't feel nostalgic about it at all

Saw a superannuation ad during the footy today and can't help thinking this is Elli McLure, who starred in Alvin Purple and The Birds in the Bush on TV, both 1972. Still looks great

This book by Sally Young, a history of media owners, their power and influence, lays out how it's ever been thus

It's late 1962 in Ascot Vale and Dad's dragged 3yo me away from playing with my toy cement-mixer on the nature strip outside our place to pose with our new car - a 1948 FX Holden!

Reading this second volume of Sally Young's history of media ownership, power and influence, which covers 1941-1972. Pretty much unputdownable. Prescient highlights? Curtin's 1941 description of the Daily Telegraph as a nitwit newspaper and Keith Murdoch's WTF Melbourne Herald editorials

Bad enough I have to sit through the interminable ads on TV from these cheap, nasty, fascist grifters - now they're contacting me directly
