Retired ELCA pastor here, ordained forty years ago. I've never heard of Advent beginning before the First Sunday of Advent. It's sometimes referred to informally as the New Year's Day of the church calendar, and my pastor remarked about that last Sunday. This question is new to me.

As I hear my cat running down the hallway and talking out the window, I remember that he's already ten years old. They're such a part of our homes, our family, our lives.

Laughing in front of cages designed to hold migrants and refugees, many of whom came to this country fleeing extreme violence and poverty, and hoping to raise their children in a more compassionate country. And many of whom followed all the legal procedures to enter the country.

I've been a Lutheran pastor for forty years. No one whines, complains and apologizes for their church like Lutherans have. Yes, it has been destructive.

Ordained forty years ago, the conversation I heard then in most congregations was (already) how much better things were twenty years before, that being 1965.
