Plague appeared because the Spartans occupied the Attic countryside and the Athenians refused to fight them in a pitched battle. They gathered into the walls of Athens and started dying because of lack of hygiene and crowding.

Losers who:
-conquered the largest territory of any Greek polis
-were crucial to the victory over Persians in the second Greco-Persian war
-actually *won* the Peloponnesian war against a much richer and more populated polis

I read his series of articles, and I am not convinced by his arguments. The author has visibly a *personal* problem with Ancient Sparta.
