Despite the name, 'Selective Mutism' should not be interpreted as 'voluntary' mutism. Speech selection is linked to anxiety and not because the person wants to be silent; some prefer to call it situational mutism.

Mutism is more common in children than in adolescents and adults. However, in adolescents and adults, it is common for them to meet the criteria for another anxiety disorder, usually social anxiety disorder. In these cases, both diagnoses are given.

Selective mutism is not exclusive to traumatic experiences; you do not have to have suffered a traumatic experience to have the disorder. Mutism usually occurs when a person enters a new school and is quiet for a time that is enough to interfere with daily life.

Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder characterized by a refusal to speak in certain situations, usually social (for example, outside the home or with close second-degree relatives), while the individual can speak in other situations (usually at home). It is classified as a DSM anxiety disorder.
