I was thinking much the same thing myself. How can a people who have been subjected to so much over the centuries turn on another people with the same lack of humanity they themselves suffered.

There was an article in The Biologist that referred to the Karuk tribe who used to do small scale burns on a rotational basis to improve biodiversity until the 1900s when they were banned from doing it. Coupled with commercial logging and other activities it's helped create this situation.
