Jubilant day for Joel Camas, the 16-year-old from the Bronx detained by ICE last month. Judge Cathy Seibel ordered his release, and he has just been reunited with his uncle. In court, Seibel lamented that migrant "kids are getting held for six months even though they have a safe place to go"

16 year old Bronx kid is released from custody today. He was grabbed in court by ICE on October 23rd. His mom already self-deported back to Ecuador in the hope of protecting her son.

There will still be a battle because ICE still wants to deport him.

Ellis turns to the testimony of U.S. Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino. How he denied using force against a man he tackled and said he didn't see the Rev. David Black hit by pepperballs.

"More telling," she says, "defendant Bovino admitted that he lied."

BIG news for Texas. State troopers in Texas will now have the authority to make immigration arrests, same as ICE and Border Patrol.

Whether this means all state troopers, or only a subset of officers, will get trained and authorized to carry out this duty remains to be seen.
NEW: The notorious 287(g) task force program has finally reached the Texas Department of Public Safety, raising fears of widespread racial profiling.

In other words: Texas is deputizing some of its state officers to act as roving ICE agents.

In a deportation system filled with backlogs, where a win might not produce a green card immediately, all previous administrations, (including the first Trump admin!) have had some basic forbearance policies to align the intent of the law with the reality of execution. No longer.

Congress created Special Immigrant Juvenile Status as a protection against deportation — yet because of procedural quirks, there is a lag/limbo between SIJS and a green card, and a person can have both a removal order AND a SIJS grant. This admin is pushing forward with removal during this lag time.
Yesterday, I went to an ICE check-in with 16-year-old Joel Camas and his lawyer, who expected him to be out in time for school by 8am because he has special immigrant juvenile (SIJ) status. Instead, he was detained.
