I suggest pick up a refurbished MacBook Air with an M chip since any M chip will run circles around the older Intel MBP. Then you can setup the old machine to run as a desktop when you’re home and use it with an external kb/mouse. Also Google Remote Desktop so you can access old files from anywhere
