A gold sword pommel from the Griffin Warrior’s grave at Pylos. This is called “gold embroidery”, made by fitting small (1 cm) L shaped pieces of gold over a form, polishing, then etching w/a design (zoom in). Very high status, amazing craftsmanship.❤️

From the Kingdom of Pylos exhibit at the Getty Villa:
two of the Warrior Prince’s gold rings.
This Mycenaean prince wore Minoan rings.

Remember Homer’s King Nestor, from Sandy Pylos?
Today I went to the Getty Villa to see objects from the Tomb of the Griffin Warrior.
The. Best. Day!!

TOMORROW!!
At the Getty Villa!
I’ve been reading about the excavations at Pylos since the 60s. I ordered the exhibit catalogue in January: we were taught to research, to learn about what we’re fortunate to actually see.
Absolute excitement and joy, especially during these times.

Yesterday, I posted this photo of my father, remembering his landing on Juno Beach, on June 6, 1944.
Never, EVER, could he have imagined that his daughter would be seeing the same evil on this continent, in this country, in this city.
I think of his courage, his kindness, and his honor.
I stand.

I thought so, but I'm prejudiced!
Here he is, right after he returned home to Alberta 🇨🇦, after the war.
He joined the army in 1939 and was gone for almost 8 years.

My Daddy was also there, on that day, on that same beach.

81 years ago, this young man (he was 23) from Alberta 🇨🇦, landed on Juno Beach.
His ancestors had left this very same region in the 1630s to settle in Quebec.
He would tell us about people hearing him speak French and welcoming him "home" with calvados and home-cooked meals.

This is my mother, on her 90th birthday.
Imagine her with shingles ON HER FACE a few years later.

My son is an Olympian and an MD.
He had a freak accident that severed the nerve in 1 leg, behind the knee, wears a brace.
Today, he swam in Masters Swimming Nationals.
Came in 1st in 100m butterfly.
I’m so proud of his achievement!!
❤️❤️❤️!

That young soldier came home and studied, thanks to 🇨🇦 funding for veterans.
He had a Ph.D. from the U. of Alberta and ended up working all over the world.
🇨🇦 took care of him during his last years at Sunnybrook Vet. Hosp, Toronto.
He was 95, at Sunnybrook, in that photo w/ my Mom
SO GRATEFUL to 🇨🇦!

My father was 95 in this photo, my mother was 87.
My father died when he was 97, my mother when she was 95.
They had wonderful, adventurous, lives.
🇺🇸
I'm 73 and don't sleep at night, worrying about my SS and Medicare.
See the difference?

Here's my Dad, at a Remembrance Day event in Toronto, with my Mom.
He was 95.

My father was one of those soldiers, on that beach, on that day.
He volunteered in 1939. By D Day, he had been in the army almost 4 1/2 years.
Here he is, in England, before D Day.

My own father was diagnosed with PTSD in his late 80's, which also just breaks my heart.
He received care before dementia set in: he spent his last years at the Sunnybrook Veterans Center in Toronto. They gave him the most AMAZING care.
Here he is, with my Mom.

Your mother is absolutely beautiful, your father so gallant, both of them so brave! ❤️
People here forget that Canadians were at war since 1938. Here's MY Dad, somewhere in England, with the 🇨🇦 Army, before D-Day. He was gone for SIX years.

Right. The "work will set you free" crowd.
And we all know how THAT ended.
