To protect our economy, our security, our innovations, our citizens, etc. Why would we not want to irate a bully? If they want to do business with us, and to do so freely, it's up to them to stop their nefarious activities. In the meantime, we need to protect ourselves and tariffs are part of that.

I wouldn't say that protecting ourselves is zero return. Like I said, China is a IP thief and a bully. And also, take EU countries like Germany who bought Russian gas for years, where do you think Russia invested that money into? With China, it's very similar. Why trade with such a nation?

We should indeed tariff China. Not because Trump is asking for it, but because it's the right thing to do for ourselves. Canada was one of the first country in the world to recognize the PRC, but they've been stealing our IPs and more. Let's not exchange one bully for another.

I totally agree that we need this in Canada, the US isn't the only country with such a law, China does too for example. What worries me though, is that some Canadian governments, like the previous Trudeau government, wouldn't hesitate to use a Canadian cloud against Canadians themselves.

Our issues with China started years ago, Nortel is a prime example of that.

Letting Chinese EV into our market, would be as damning as the Germans buying Russian gas.

We sure can ignore possible solutions if said solutions damns us all. If the issue is that our car makers can't or won't meet the demand, we can work with other automakers from other nations like Japan and Germany.

If Trump decides to terminate CUSMA, we can't trade one bully for another. We need to focus on CETA, CPTPP and create new trade agreements with other markets like Mercosur. A CANZUK agreement would also be a great boon.
