We hope this work sparks more research into scabies epidemiology. There's still a lot to learn, and we're excited to see where this goes.

Thanks to my co-authors Mariëtte Hooiveld and Jacco Wallinga and funders @rivm-nl.bsky.social and @ec.europa.eu (Horizon ESCAPE project)!

Caveat #2: Our Rt estimates were estimated using GP consultation dates as a proxy for symptom onset, but diagnostic delays of 7–12 are well-documented. Future work needs:
- Data on time from symptom onset to healthcare seeking
- Incidence data that captures cases outside GP settings

Caveat #1: Our serial interval estimates rely on limited outbreak data and carry real uncertainty. More studies, especially from community settings, are needed with specific collection of:
- Transmission pair data
- Data on primary infections vs. reinfections

We also developed {mitey}, an R 📦 implementing our methods for serial interval (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25294601/) and Rt (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17476782/) estimation.

It's validated against historical outbreaks and applicable to other infectious diseases too.

Key findings:
📍 Serial interval: ranged 98-167 days across studies w pooled mean 123 days
📍Annual growth rate: 0.25 (95% CI: 0.2, 0.3)
📍 R₀ = 1.09 (1.07, 1.11) ➡️ preventing 8% of secondary infections could control epidemic growth.
📍 Transmission peaks in summer (July), consultations peak in fall

I assume this is possible. I'll work on it ;)

Do you mean zooming out to see the path across the whole map?

I use chrome as a calculator all the time! It's also very handy for conversions (miles -> km, EUR -> USD, etc.)

Thanks @cecibaldoni.bsky.social! I'm sad to leave the great network I've created in Europe, but very excited for my next step 😁
