The far end of the trail features the partially collapsed Windy Point tunnel and a fantastic view of the Tunnel Creek valley.

That’s why the snow sheds in the pictures were built, but the rail line was abandoned in 1929, the town dried up, and the sheds have fallen into disrepair. We also met two of the cutest fellow hikers we’ve yet encountered on trail.

This weekend we explored the Wellington end of the Iron Goat trail, site of the deadliest avalanche in US history. In 1910, it took out two trains that were waiting in the local depot, knocking them off the tracks into the Tye River valley below and killing 96 people.

Nice day for horsing around on Taylor Mountain. There used to be a section of private property right in the middle of the park, but that’s gone now and there are fresh new trails where it used to be, so we explored them today.

I thought I’d hiked just about everything on Cougar Mountain, but a friend mentioned the Licorice Fern trail recently, and I found something I’d overlooked. Parking is on the street, and the small sign marking the trail would be easy to miss, but the trail itself is easy and well-maintained.

The upper upper falls that can only be seen from a short distance further up the trail. If you go, don’t think the bridge is your destination. Keep going!
