Author/writer/recovering attorney/dad/husband. Jack of many trades, master of none. Only have time for the right kinds of shenanigans. Opinions are mine alone.
Today’s card post teaches us all about the less famous Millard Fillmore chopping down the cherry tree incident. He still looks vaguely pissed off remembering it.

#20books When you write as much sports as I do, there’s always a quest for the games to mean something. Bill Curry always finds that meaning and shares it remarkably well in his book. He sent me this when I interviewed him for a book now living in hiatus. Made me wish I’d just written his instead.

Today, two legendary things. Loved the Cruisin’ albums with fake radio patter. As a kid, I wore these out on vinyl. Second, McKay Books for the assist on finding them again.

Today’s share of the day is back to card land. If you don’t know about Harvey Haddix, well, he was one of my subjects in my book Almost Perfect about MLB pitchers who just missed throwing perfect games. Harvey… well, if you don’t know, read the book! @sabrbbcards.bsky.social

#20books I love rock and roll criticism, but nobody hits the balance of evaluation and appreciation as well as Peter Guralnick. This was the book that established him and is a great starting place for a phenomenal catalog. Heard him speak at Southern Festival of Books a few years back- a legend.

Today’s music of the day is Shannon McNally. I lean hard into the alt edge of alt country (if that’s even a thing still) but found Shannon at Thacker Mountain Radio in Mississippi. Great album of Waylon Jennings-related songs, which she signed with a gold Sharpie.

Among many nerdy pursuits, I re-added sports cards to the list thanks to my son. This time around, I buy almost no packs but get a lot of single cards in less than perfect shape. Here’s a 1966 Topps Willie Mays. Does it have a big crease? Yes it does. Do I care? I do not. @sabrbbcards.bsky.social

#20books I like the challenge of putting up 20 favored books, but darn it, there are things to say. How much did I love this book? Enough that a jar from the leftovers of Jim Williams’s vast collection of knick-knacks sits on my piano. Love Savannah, love the book. Movie is kinda meh.

Hello, kind folks of Blue Sky. Trying to share a little positivity. Last record I bought (with a birthday gift card). One of my favorite Dylan albums- and having “Man in the Long Black Coat” as the end of Side A made the LP hit a little different.
