This is one of the better visualizations I've seen that illustrates the difference between pass by reference and pass by value.

My high school marching band would have been chastised if we'd marched like this in any parade, much less in front of the nation. This isn't a "show of power"; it's a show of how embarrassing we are to the rest of the world.
