Yes, you can have multiple accounts and then using either the web interface or app (at least on Android) you can then add multiple accounts so you can switch between them.

To answer the question of "Who are these things provided for?", mostly for legacy account holders still using ancient email addresses. Under Verizon they brought Yahoo & AOL together before selling the operations to an investment group.
