We had clear skies here, so we broke out the #eclipse glasses. And a colander.

Also: thoughts on just how common eclipses are, planetwide, though they're rare in any specific location - and how that fits with historical takes on how they happen and what they mean.

Prickly Pear Trail at Alta Vicente Reserve
★★★★☆
Short loop with some steep sections. Lots of cactus. (Keep your balance!) Nice views of the ocean and Point Vicente Lighthouse.

Narrow dirt trail going steeply down, paddle-like cactus immediately on each site. A tree or bush grows just past the cacti on the left. In the distance, past a brown field, trees, and a road, you can see the wide green grass of a golf course, a line of trees, a line of roofs, and beyond them the ocean and a blue sky. A promonotory, roughly triangular or trapezoidal, with the ocean beyond it and a road curving along the near side, separating it from dry brown grass and low green scrub. The point is lined with bushes and dotted with palm trees. A handful of low white buildings with red roofs are scattered around, and a narrow lighthouse tower is just visible next to one of the palm trees. A hill runs diagonally downward to the right, with low bushes nearby. In the middle distance is an expanse of green grass. Beyond it: several coves and promonitories with seaside cliffs, with a gentle hill sloping up to the left, the dark blue ocean looking calm below an empty blue sky.

Solar eclipse photos! It was hazy, and the weather forecast was partly cloudy, but the sun stayed visible and the eclipse glasses from last time haven't cracked!

Wrote up a quick review of a hiking trail

Toulon Drive Loop

In theory, this is a loop trail. It starts and ends as a dirt service road connected to a dead end, and runs along the top of a streambed for a while until it wraps around a chaparral-covered hill...

A very narrow, very bright blue damselfly on a wooden board near the edge, seen from above and to the side, its long translucent wings folded back. Its eyes are two blue spheres attached to either side of its head, making the whole body look sort of like a T-pin. Blue sky with small, scattered clouds in lines like ripples, above a hill with mostly brown scrub, but some green bushes. A narrow plank sits loosely across a small stream. Green plants line both banks. On the far side, a trail continues through the bushes. A dirt trail curves past low scrub brush toward a hillside on a sunny day. In the distance a handful of trees and the tops of two large water tanks are visible.
