Welcome new followers! Look forward to learning about my life in remote northern New Mexico and the quirky high-desert, artsy, and culturally diverse region around Taos. There will be mentions of cats, native plants, romancelandia, healthcare and education policy inequities, and climate change.

Those who work with undocumented immigrants, provide gender transition care for minors or publicly protest could be blocked from student loan forgiveness under a new rule.

Album Review – Blaine Bailey’s “Indian Country” - Saving Country Music

I have a form of cancer that is in remission and has been managed for the past 5 years through conservative, minimally-invasive care and watchful waiting.

Every year, I have had to fight my insurer, UnitedHealthcare, for pre-approvals for the routine imaging scans (MRI) used to monitor my cancer.

I’d like to see this information disaggregated by degree progress/ credit status. My suspicion is that the drop off is NEW international students (grad and undergrad) which would replace int’l students who graduated in the spring. Not having incoming cohorts of students will devastate higher ed.
The number of international students arriving in the U.S. in August fell by 19% this year compared with last year — the largest decline on record outside of the pandemic.

The data shows the steepest decline in August international student arrivals since the pandemic.

Sangre de Christo Mountains outside Taos in a sunset color festival of pinks, oranges, and purples as a thunderstorm moves through. Large rainbow visible against the mountains with thunder and lightning overhead. Heavy rain and wind starting just as I took this photo. No filters.

Woke up to thick, dense, heavenly fog this morning, and wondered if I had been Raptured. Asked spouse his opinion, and he thought not since we still had our cats and earthly possessions. Rapture or no, the blooming yellow chamisa looks stunning in this fog.

It's coneflower/ echinacea bloom season. I started these from seed indoors this past winter, and am very surprised to get blooms this first year. Yellow and pink flowers are the Cheyenne Spirit, and the white blossom is Powwow white variety.

During the last years of her life, my mother became severely disabled, and thanks to Medicaid was able to live in a nursing home that provided her with round the clock care. More than half of her direct caregivers were recent immigrants who were caregivers by day, college students by night.
Nursing homes already struggling to recruit staff are now grappling with President Donald Trump’s attack on one of their few reliable sources of workers: immigration.

Over the past two years, my local FB discussion groups where postings about lost cattle, finding a plumber, or reporting temporary electricity outages are the norm, have increasingly included weather conspiracies. This is the next major and dangerous alignment between the far left and the far right.
On multiple fronts the normalization of lies and conspiracy theories in American politics will only grow more dangerous, including with climate-related terrorism 👉🏻

So what is the over/under on Trump watching the bad press, seeing posts on social media tonight, and then throwing his own party (and bill) under the bus by vetoing it and proclaiming himself the savior of Medicaid/SNAP? Is TACO gonna TACO?

After waiting four years for cuttings to grow, and trying to find the perfect light in my home, my Stapelia gigantea finally bloomed for the first time.

It is a carrion plant, so the flower, which is about 8 inches wide, has a slight eau de rotting flesh to attract pollinators.

Just saw 28 Years Later. Really enjoyed it and the way it was playing with the stereotypical boy's coming-of-age tale genre. I had not read any reviews, and don't want to post any spoilers, but can say was a more surreal addition to the previous movies. Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes were excellent.

So, does this mean the student loan repayment formulas (SAVE Plan) get to stand? Asking for a friend…who is trying to find a silver lining in this awfulness.
there is no jurisprudence at work here. the republican court believes that anything a republican president is presumptively constitutional, even if it directly violates the unambiguous constitutional text and causes total chaos in law and policy.

I miss living in the Twin Cities so much…
My favorite moment of the tour was when someone held up their cat to the assembled crowd and told us its name, and everyone spontaneously murmured the name back in unison like they were in thrall to a newly anointed god. 10/10 no notes.
