Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, the plant is called Cuetlaxōchitl. In Mexico and Guatemala, flor de nochebuena, meaning "Christmas Eve flower." It was brought to the United States in 1828 by Joel Roberts Poinsett, and that’s how it got its name here.
