Brains like order. It's binary thinking (xxx vs. yyy), which is less cognitively taxing than spectrum thinking. In this instance, it normalizes xxx as worse than yyy, which is subjective.
Take it a step further, and it's a way to exercise power - if xxx is worse than yyy, then we should do zzz.
