#Cyanotype day. Teeny tiny people in test prints, and if they go well a larger image perhaps.

I am ridiculously happy about this silly walrus finally working out in cyanotype. Sneak peak for next week's show 'Blue' at McMullen Gallery, Edmonton. A show to pause and rest within, I hope. Something very needed.
A blue cyanotype sits on white towels after being blotted. It is still slightly wet. The enormous face of a glacier with shattered ice, cracks and ice boulders from recent calving can be seen with a thin line of ocean along the bottom. A very small walrus sits on the lower right side. For scale, that is about the height of an average adult human. The image was taken in Svalbard April 2025 as part of the Arctic circle residency.

I’ve been going through images and thoughts from the Arctic Circle residency. It was an incredible trip, and a privilege to spend time in such a beautiful, fragile space, with so many other wonderful humans. Especially right niw, the focus on simply being, and making in that landscape was a gift.
A large wall of glacier ice towers above the steel grey sea. A small rock outcropping is visible at left, and a small dark brown shape at lower right near sea level. A foolish walrus is sitting right where the glacier will one day calve again. The ice is in shade but still a deeper hint of blue comes through along the glacier face A calm sea provides a reflection of the glacier, with ice floe drifting in front. The sun is backlighting some of the seracs as they stand vertical, tall, ready to split and melt, and become a new iceberg. The water is clear and some can be seen underwater as well in shades of blue A small stretch of open water at sea is filling in and freezing into thin sea ice, pancakes that drift and spin, freezing our ship in place for the night. Midnight sun gives a twilight feel of blues and a hint of orange along the horizon

I did not think I would see the northern lights this trip; it will be midnight sun 3 days after arrival to Svalbard. But, the plane was juuuust south enough on the way to Oslo to see these through the night. Magical. (Also my phone, as I did not have the right lens easy to grab. Oops.)
Daylight along the horizon, stars and a soft green band of northern lights in the sky, bisected by a plane wing with tip turned up. Just dark enough to see the Aurora!

The small versions this week came out well, so scaling up a bit. One paper had spots on it but oh well. From Oct at Bighorn Dam spillway. Downstream from all the glacier work, upstream from Edmonton.

A hand and pen sit by the blue cyanorypes for scale, small versions of the final prints. The lake side of bighorn Dam is shown on the left and the lake side spillway on the right. The water level is at least 25 ft higher than the last time I was there. Photos taken Oct 2024 Larger blue cyanotype prints on mitsumata paper sit out, freshly exposed. The first one is darker, and the left one is most recent and lighter. Over the next 24 hours they will darken more. Once ready I will cut them down to 15x20 inches and chincolle or glue them onto white backing sheets of Somerset paper.

Testing some ways to do #cyanotype outdoors. Super excited to be heading to Svalbard with the Arctic Circle Residency in just over a week! Have now coated 78 sheets of paper and counting...
Cyanotype are exposing on corplast above snow in sunshine. Each is enclosed in acetate to stay dry Second test, cyanotype a with no acetate on corplast on snow, with the snow on the paper directly making marks and melting a bit Right side is finished cyanotype with no acetate, left is with acetate and much darker (snow is apparently very translucent and doesn't block light very well!) Normal water vs salt water developing. They appear similar , water and snow spots on dark blue paper

Hello! Posting older work as an intro, from 2023 at the Art Gallery of St Albert, Alberta, Canada. I work in printmaking, photo, and print adjacent media, large and small, focused on the headwaters, watersheds, and glaciers in the eastern slopes and out in the prairies to Edmonton (home).
Silk panels silk screened with a collage of mountain and glacier imagery hang from the ceiling in the centre of a brightly lit Gallery space; larger images of repeat photography hang on the walls. The silk shows images from the Athabasca, Bow, and North Saskatchewan. Seen here is an image of the Athabasca Glacier flowing across 5 four by nine foot panels. The images along the wall combine historical and contemporary images by the artist re-photogrphed in the same place, drawings of older archive on top of the new images of the Bow Glacier and Saskatchewan Glacier, showcasing how they have melted back. A person is seen looking at the work, giving a sence of scale. The work is large, seven feet tall, and meant to feel immersive, with recognizable landmarks to tell residents where they are looking in Downtown Edmonton's river landscape.

This week in the studio I've been getting back to #cyanotype. Photo is work from last year, with the #etching a few weeks old but from same trip. (Takes longer to draw than to print negatives!) about #water, headwaters and impacts downstream.

20x26 inch large format cyanotype, printed on mitsumata washi and mounted with chincolle techniques. The deep Prussian blue matches with the subject matter of the photo. A large brightly lit glacier with just a hint of sun on it (Saskatchewan glacier, Alberta Canada) sits in the background, with stormy clouds. In the foreground large sheets of ice buckle up (a frozen lake). A very small mountaineer with ice ax is just visible walking between two larger frozen icebergs calved the summer before. Perfect timing for both sun and figure. An 8x10 inch etching with a closeup of the toe of the Saskatchewan Glacier last Feb. Printed in Prussian blue with some a la poupee spot colour in real in sky and foreground. The small hint of mountain in top left is cool black. The snow drifts are covering the banded glacial ice, spitbite giving it a lighter more fluid tone over the much darker glacier ice it covers.

Hands are in the midst of pulling a paper with new fresh print away from the plate, the moment of reveal for the image. You can see the details of the ice wall where solid, and where it has shared away and fallen. Small lines show striations in the surface of the ice. The print shows the Saskatchewan glacier tie and is printed in Prussian blue, with some teal in foreground snow, sky, and black in the background mountain peak.
