ASHE was a success! Hit a milestone in my career, which was sitting in the audience to watch my student collaborators present our work! This project, focused on understanding paths into bioscience PhD programs & parent education influences, came out of an advanced qual course! #ASHE2024 #ASHE24

Student affairs grad progs can be traced back to 1914, w Teachers College's diploma for Deans of Women. Newly out: A paper on women's experiences in engineering internships, in collab w @anniewoff.bsky.social & colleagues! Findings: internships build skills, clarify interests, provide access to other opportunities, but experiences vary by manager/org support received and gender/race/age dynamics.

To better understand internships as early career socialization experiences, we recruited undergraduate women in engineering to examine how internships influence their career development and goals....Synthesizing stories across multiple data sources, the findings include five major themes: recognizing and building hard and soft skills; clarification of career interests; managerial and organizational support; navigation of gender, age, and racial dynamics; and access to future professional opportunities.

This news is really cool, as Goldin's work has been critical to my own thinking, teaching, & writing re: women in higher US education, esp across history. This graph by Goldin & Katz (2011) is one of my teaching go-tos about the start of women's & coed colleges.
Line graph indicating the number of institutions that opened as coed, male-only, or female only from 1830-1940. In 1830, men's only colleges were the norm, until the quick rise of women's and coed colleges in the late 1800s. Coed colleges began surpassing men's institutions around 1900.
